A Guide to Central Heating and Air Conditioning

Central heating and air conditioning is a forced air system whereby both cooled and humidified air can be delivered through the same ductwork used by hot air, depending on the season. In places that have long, cold winters it becomes very important to install central heating. These systems are often run by gas or oil, and sometimes electricity or solid fuel and even in some cases from the power generated by the sun. The main heater is usually found underground, in the basement. The air ducts will push the heat throughout the home or perhaps you have chosen the steam or water option which operates by pipes pushing the liquids to the convectors or room radiators. It is important to have adequate insulation that can prevent heating from being lost through the roofs or the walls.

People generally choose to put in residential air conditioning where the summertime heat climbs high. An air conditioner is powered by electricity and removes heat from the air by using basic refrigeration techniques. By providing both cool air in the summer and heat in the winter, an A/C unit with a heat pump will be all you need for comfort. When winter time comes, warmth from the outside is taken in by a heat pump and is brought inside. In order to keep the house cool in the summer, it takes the heat from the inside air and pumps it outside. Tubing filled with refrigerant connects the indoor air handler to the outdoor condenser/compressor. The process is quite simple, really. As the refrigerant moves through the cycles, the coils within the air handler are cooled or warmed depending on the settings. The air is then returned to the room via a blower.

A central heating and air conditioning system may adversely affect the health of your family because it makes the air very dry. Since humidifiers return moisture to the air, people with asthma or chronic coughs could benefit from them in these circumstances. There are many ways and means of getting humidity into the air, ranging from expensive battery or electrical operated products to something as easy as a container of water on a radiator. If you utilize a humidifier that doesn't create steam, it's crucial to disinfect it once in a while using a special cleaning product.

But if you've got cause for concern about high humidity levels instead, it'll be worth it to set up de-humidifiers, specifically in bedrooms so that linens and clothing do not get mold on them. In coastal areas where humidity levels can be very high, dehumidifiers can be useful, especially during winter.

You must choose a good contractor if you are planning to install a new central heating and air conditioning system. You must install the equipment correctly in order to maintain safety and effectiveness. A central air-conditioning or heating system, if well-maintained, can serve you easily for 12 to 14 years. It is important to do routine maintenance to check for leaks and proper drainage. Care must be taken not to leave too much water in the system. Always examine the hose connections for any signs of damage or dripping, as well as making sure the condensate piping drains without any blockages. The filter will need to be switched out after every four to five weeks.
